A train station is always a space where excitement, farewells, and unexpected encounters intersect.
A very long time ago, such a special moment arrived at a small, simple station in Italy.
News came like a bolt from the blue—or rather, like a gift—to the station master leading an ordinary life.
It was the fact that the train carrying the greatest musician of the time, the maestro Giuseppe Verdi, was stopping briefly at this station.
The station master was a self-proclaimed, ardent fan of Verdi.
To him, who shed tears listening to his operas and found solace in his scores, Verdi was not merely a composer but a beacon of his life.
The station master made a decision. "I was determined to get the master's autograph on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," he said. However, the master was not an easy person to deal with. Verdi was known for his strict and unapproachable personality, so simply handing him a piece of paper was likely to result in rejection. The stationmaster was deep in thought. How could he obtain the autograph in his good mood without offending him? The ingenious 'unconventional method' chosen instead of the standard approach. Finally, the train stopped and the doors opened. The stationmaster put his pre-prepared plan into action.
He boarded Verdi's carriage not as a fan seeking an autograph, but as a very fastidious and responsible stationmaster."I would like to check your ticket."
Verdi handed over his ticket nonchalantly. However, the stationmaster did not stop at checking the ticket. Instead, he began to provoke Verdi.
"This carriage is quite dirty. Aren't you displeased that a maestro is staying in a place like this?" "No, it is clean enough as it is, so why are you making a fuss?"
Verdi replied with a puzzled look, but the stationmaster did not stop. This time, he took a bolder approach.
"Even so, putting your feet on the seat opposite you is impolite. A cultured person would never do that."
Even the dignified Verdi eventually exploded. After all, being called impolite was the greatest insult to a gentleman.
Verdi, fuming with anger, finally shouted, "This is outrageous treatment! Bring me the petition right now!"The stationmaster inwardly cheered. He immediately ran outside and retrieved the 'signature book' he had prepared in advance.
Verdi picked up a pen without hesitation and scribbled his grievances into the book. It was the moment when the master's handwriting, which he had so desperately desired, was finally imprinted on the paper.
After the angry signing was finished, the stationmaster cautiously revealed his true feelings.
I wanted to convey that this was actually a desperate act I had concocted because I wanted your autograph so badly, and that although I was truly sorry for being rude, I wanted to communicate with you, even if it was just like this.
How did Verdi react? Was he even angrier at the fact that he had been deceived? No. The maestro burst into a hollow laugh.
He was actually impressed by the passion and wit of the fan who had come up with such an ingenious scheme to captivate him. Verdi readily and politely left his name again next to the autograph.
We often insist on following only the 'set path' to achieve our goals.
However, sometimes that standard method becomes a thick wall that blocks our way.
Korean society has a particularly strong tendency to force the 'correct answer.' I mean the fixed notions that one must study this way and achieve success that way. However, true wisdom in life begins where you break the mold. If the station master had politely asked Verdi for an autograph, he might have been refused, never even remembered as one of many fans. But he left a deep impression on the maestro's mind through the detour of 'complaining.' "The first thing a person must learn is how to live with their brain." This does not simply mean to become smarter. It refers to an 'attitude toward life' that involves flexibly managing one's thoughts, viewing situations from a multidimensional perspective, and finding creative solutions.
Instead of sighing in the face of a dead end, asking "How can I turn this situation around?"—that is the mark of someone who properly utilizes their brain.
In a world changing as rapidly as today, clinging only to past methods is like a train that has come to a standstill.
Just as the stationmaster's ingenuity made Verdi laugh, we too sometimes need a gentle unconventionality.
If you are currently struggling with an unresolved worry, why not pause for a moment and shift the direction of your thoughts?
If a frontal assault is difficult, look to the side; if the side is blocked, look behind you.
The true beauty of life lies in the laughter and wisdom that burst forth from unexpected places.
