However, the conversation between the monk Kenjin and the abbot in a Buddhist fable presents us with a completely different perspective.
The fact that this arduous 'muddy path' we walk is precisely the only way to prove that we are alive.
The novice monk Kenjin changed his straw sandals countless times as he continued begging and wandering every day.
He felt a sense of injustice at his situation, wearing out shoes in a few months that others would wear for a year.
A sense of skepticism overwhelmed him, asking, "What is the point of suffering like this, just wearing out my shoes?"
This resembles the 'burnout' that many modern people experience in their work lives or while pursuing self-development.
It is a state where you see no results and feel like only your body is wearing out.
The head monk takes Gyeonjin to a muddy road after the rain and asks.
"Can you find your footprints on the dry road you walked yesterday?"
Gyeonjin could not answer. This is because while a hard and smooth road is comfortable to walk on, it leaves no trace of anyone.
On the other hand, on a muddy road where your feet sink deep, deep and clear footprints remain.
The scenes we call 'success' in our lives usually do not take place on smooth roads.
Record of Trials: Only those who have suffered leave behind traces of 'wisdom' to comfort others.
Evidence of Growth: A life without any twists and turns ultimately fails to create any story.
The Weight of Life: The reason walking on a muddy road is difficult is that I am engraving a deep imprint on the earth.
"Only a muddy road leaves footprints."
